Dresses, skirts & jackets

Dresses, skirts, waistcoats, capes and trews come in UK sizes 6–28, shown with the letter size (for example UK 12 (M)), just like the clothes you already own. How to measure

  1. Bust: around the fullest part of your bust, tape level under your arms.
  2. Waist: around the narrowest part of your waist, usually just above the belly button.
  3. Hip: feet together, around the widest part of your hips and seat.

Dresses: go by your bust and waist. Skirts and trews: go by your waist and hip. Between two sizes? Choose the larger.

Kilts & kilted skirts

Every kilt is cut to your own measurements. All you need is a tape measure and a couple of minutes.

Measure on your body, not on a garment. We add the room the kilt needs.
  1. 1

    Waist Required

Measure around your body at navel level, about 2 inches above your hip bone and higher than where your jeans sit. Keep the tape tight.

A kilt sits higher than trousers. Measuring too low is the most common mistake.

  2. 2

    Fell Optional

The distance from your waist line (1) down to your hip line (3), roughly halfway to your seat.

Leave it blank if you're unsure; it isn't needed for most orders.

  3. 3

    Hip / seat Optional

Stand with your feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips and seat. Empty your pockets first.

Worth adding if your hips are much fuller than your waist.

  4. 4

    Kilt length Required

Kneel upright on the floor. Put the end of the tape on the floor and measure straight up to your belly button.

This puts the hem on the middle of your knee, the traditional length. Kilts shouldn't be worn too long.

Custom length: shorter or longer?

Start from your kneeling measurement (step 4), then adjust:

Where the hem landsLength to choose
Above the kneeKneeling measurement minus 2–3 in
Middle of the knee (traditional)Your kneeling measurement
Just below the kneeKneeling measurement plus 2 in

No one to help you measure?

Measure a skirt or kilt you already own that fits well. Lay it flat and fasten it:

  • Waist: measure straight across the top of the waistband and double it.
  • Hip: measure straight across 7–8 inches below the waistband and double it.
  • Length: measure from the top of the waistband down to the hem.

Good to know

  • Between two sizes? Choose the larger one, or use custom measurements. The kilt fastens with buckled straps, so it adjusts by about an inch.
  • Measure over thin clothing with empty pockets, standing tall and relaxed. A helper makes it easier, especially for the length.
  • Outfits and accessories (shirts, hose, shoes, hats) use the standard sizes shown in their own menus.
  • Not sure? Email your size or measurements to [email protected] and we'll check them before we cut.

Girls

Girls' pieces are sized by age. Ages are a guide: go by height and chest first. Between sizes? Size up so there is room to grow, or choose Made to measure.
